Why Quick Cards
Hello, my name is Laura and I’m excited to bring you a new quick card idea each Thursday through March! We all have the need for a quick card. The last minute invite. A birthday you forgot. Your kid asking, “Mom, I need a guy birthday, I’m on my way” (I’ve had that happen more than once), You only have half a hour to create and you want a finished piece. I will be here to give you some tips on getting cards out fast, without sacrificing content.
This Week’s Project
First up is my favorite way to make a quick card; kraft on black. Seriously, you can put the Copics, watercolors, and colored pencils away, Unies, because you can have a fun, elegant card with just black ink on kraft paper. Don’t have kraft? No problem, you can use a light brown cardstock too. I just love the texture of kraft paper, so I suggest you add it to you arsenal. It even comes in a nice grey at The Lob (Hobby Lobby).
This card took me 15 minutes and 40 seconds to make. I did stop my timer to photograph my steps, but otherwise, that was my make time, including die cutting the paper.
Steps
First I gathered my supplies. I often think of other things along the way, so don’t feel limited by this step.
I cut out my kraft paper using a wonky stitch die, then stamped this cute bunny from Tree With Love. While my stamp still had ink on it, I stamped it on a scrap piece of paper to make a mask.
Quick hint: once I make a mask, I store it with my kit to use next time.
After cutting out my mask, I laid it over my stamped image, mixed some white paint with water, and gave it some fun “snow” splatters, using a fan brush.
Once all my splatters were on, I set it aside and stamped out my sentiment from Catching The Snow. The Lisa Glanz sentiments are perfect to mix and match. I inked the edges with black distress ink to give some definition between my two pieces of kraft paper. Then I decided to add a couple of washi tape strips for some added flair and a clear gem to the top of the tree. To finish it off, I matted onto black card stock. The black background gives a nice crisp look.
The Results
And here we are, a super quick card that anyone on your list would love to receive!
The Challenge
Now the fun part. We are issuing a challenge to you, with prizes! Create your own quick card, or other project, using black on kraft. I know we all craft at different speeds, so I’m not holding you to a time limit, but I encourage you to try to not overthink the process and just free yourself to create. We will be leaving this challenge open for one week, with another coming next week, so be sure to check back then.
Share your card creations with us in the challenge album over on the Unity {show & tell}!
