Welcome to the new monthly challenge – Have Fun Adding Texture! So excited about this challenge as, first, being all about texture myself, I get to play myself, and, second, I can’t wait to be inspired by what you create! All formats are welcome – art journals, tags, cards, canvases, … and all occasions! Here’s my first inspiration for the challenge!
Texture – tactile or visual, the feel or appearance of a surface. Since most of our efforts are two dimensional, visual texture can be added with a stamp (like a tire print or zigzag sewing line) and with patterned paper (for example, a wood grain board background), or by just by adding shading or lines to your coloring efforts, making them appear more 3 dimensional.
However, physical texture can also easily be added to cards with use of different mediums, varying consistency from smooth to coarse, shiny to dull, thick to thin, etc. Examples include use of: tactile paper options (Washi tape, coarse watercolor paper, burlap, corrugated paper, foiled paper, die cuts, …); using stencils with pastes, gels, and foils; adding ephemera or trinkets; embossing (dry or wet – embossing powders and embossing folders), etc.
My first card for this challenge uses a combo of visual and physical textures. I tried to watercolor the image with dimension, adding pencil and pen for definition. I then fussy cut it and bent the image so it didn’t lie flat. I used Unity’s Christmas Wishes for this card. I also embossed the sentiment using Fired Brick Oxide ink and a sparkly clear Nuvo powder. I added gold bell trinkets to the center of the image.
I stamped a lace background using a stamp from the September 2018 SMAK, Let Life Unfold kit. I added markings and a little color to this background for interest and fun. Finally, I used Dolly Doily stencil from Polka Dot Orchard with a spray glitter paint for the image backdrop. A sparkly ribbon and gold crystals were used to complete this card.
Again, I had fun creating this card. Hope this helps to inspire you to try a little something new!
