Hi friends,
I’m so excited to be on the Unity blog today sharing an easy way to jazz up your backgrounds. I’m featuring the January Background of the Month, called Old News. Here is a photo of the design below:
This is an awesome mixed media stamp, and the design is so detailed that you really don’t need to add much to it. I’m going to show you an easy way to add color to this design style and havea card ready to go in less than 1/2 hour!
Below are all the supplies you need to achieve this look (I’ve forgotten to add the black ink and sentiment, sorry!)
The first step is to create a colorful background. There are so many ways to achieve this look, which is awesome! For this card, I used my gelli plate, brayer, and acrylic inks in shades of green and teal with a touch of gold to achieve a colorful background. Below is what the background looks like with just the stamp over it. You can see the colors without the stamped image in the photo above.
Once my background was ready, I stamped the Old News image over it in black ink. Make sure your ink is juicy and be prepared to stamp it more than once over a background such as this. If you have a stamp platform, that would be ideal to ensure you stamp the same spot everytime!
Now that I stamped my image, I needed to decide if I wanted to add more to my card panel or just finish it with a sentiment. I decided to stick with just a sentiment so that my audience could see that beautiful detail from the stamp! I used a sentiment from Magical Lilac stamp set and framed it in black and gold to bring out the colors behind it. I finished with some shiny string behind the sentiment for a little interest and shine!
A few other ways to get an inky background is to ink blend using a few of your favorite colors and then spray with water to get a blotchy look. Or ink schmoosh by placing the ink directly onto a glass matt, spray the ink with water, and place your card panel over the inked-up area. Repeat that process until you have the coverage you desire! Thanks for stopping by!
