Floral Birthday Card – Unity May Challenge

May 18, 2023 - by Sandhya Iyer

Floral Birthday Card – Unity May Challenge

Welcome to another inspirational post for the May challenge of the month on the Unity Blog – Floral and Watercolor. Today I am sharing a floral birthday card featuring the giant poppy from Unusual Day Poppy and a sentiment from Woodland Wreath. Today’s chosen watercolor medium is Distress Reinkers. Before jumping into card details, I want to share that have an awesome new release + an amazing sale dropping later today at Unity Stamp Company. Be sure to check it out.

Floral Birthday Card

I started by stamping the giant poppy image on Fabriano Hot pressed watercolor paper. Now, I have said this before, but will say it again. I just love this smooth watercolor paper for stamping and water coloring.

Next, I added a few drops of Distress Inks from Reinker bottles on my glass mat. This is an amazing watercolor medium for the wet-on-wet technique. I simply wet one petal at a time and drop the ink along the edges and allow water to do its magic. It’s also a good idea to alternate between just red and a mix of red and orange to create a better contrast. I am loving the poppies growing around here this season and the red ones always leave me gaping in awe.

Next, I stamped the happy birthday sentiment from Woodland Wreath and went on to die-cut the panel using a rectangle die from Gina Marie Designs. The font in this stamp set is very pretty and complements the poppy beautifully. I felt the need for something extra so settled for a few splatters using the leftover inks on my glass mat. Finally, I attached it to an A2 card base and called it done.
