Hi friends!
September’s Background of the Month is ADORABLE and today I’m going to share a simple but playful card with a fun technique that brings your card to the next level!
I stamped these cute ghosts from September’s BOM onto a piece of 5.5×4.25 white cardstock using permanent black ink. At first, I intended to color all of the ghosts but, after more reflection, I decided to color just a few of them and leave the rest in black and white! I’ve seen this spotlight technique done before and think it’s so clever! I colored 4 of the ghosts with my Copic markers in shades of purple (V09, V17, V06, V05), Green (YG03, YG09, YG17, YG67), blue (B12, B24, B28) and grey (C3, C5, C7).
Now that my coloring was finished, this is where I did a really fun technique that adds so much detail to any card! Using 2 types of nesting dies (one rectangle and one scalloped), I used the rectangle one to die cut through the colored ghost card panel and used the scalloped one to die cut a piece of 5.5×4.25 black cardstock. I use a lightweight tape to adhere the die over the colored card panel so that it doesn’t move in the die cutting process and, thus, ruin my card! Next, I adhered the inside (positive) part of the ghost panel to the scalloped black die cut, adhered the outer (negative) part of the ghost panel onto a 5.5×4.25 white card base, and then adhered the scalloped and colored ghost panels over the negative panel Oh, and I trimmed down the negative ghost panel to 5.25×4. When all was finished, I had layers of black, white, black, white! I love this technique, and it can be used for just about any design scenario!
Get creative in the style of dies you use for this technique as well, as they add another element of interest! The Deckle & Stitches die is another fantastic option to use for this technique!
I finished my card by adding a playful sentiment from Chick Tribe stamp that says, “I’d be lost without you by my side”, which was the perfect verse to show the 4 ghosts standing out among the other ones! Then I added black gel pen to the eyes and lips of the colored ghosts along with glossy accents over the eyes (another cool option would be to add tiny googly eyes to the ghosts)!
I was so excited with the end result of this card, and it sooooo easy to do! To shop the products used for this blog, click on the description to be taken to the Unity shop.
