Hi friends!
Today I’m sharing a very simple technique called Silhouette stamping! I love this technique because it’s versatile and can be used for men and women and children alike and for any occasion! I’ll be using January’s Uniquely Unity kit, Hero Arts Reactive inks, Unity’s masking paper, and Unity’s Moon layering stencil.
First, I lined up the flowers from January’s Uniquely Unity kit where I wanted them and then stamped them in permanent black ink onto a piece of white cardstock sized 5.5×4.25. I stamped the images only once because I like the imperfect look, but if you want a solid image you may need to stamp a few times. Next, I wanted a bright moon behind the flowers, so I created a mask for the moon by die cutting a circle onto Unity’s masking sheets and placed the masking paper over the flowers. This protected the area behind the masking.
Next, I ink blended an evening sky background over the flowers and the masked circle, going from shades of purple to blue to black.
TIP: For a bolder silhouette image, stamp the image after ink blending OR heat emboss the silhouette image with clear embossing powder. This will protect the image from fading when you ink blend over it.
Once the ink blending was done, I sprayed water over it to get those cool watermarks that reactive inks are so famous for doing! Then I removed the mask and was left with a large white circle behind the flowers – the evening moon! But alas, the moon needed a bit more detail. So, I used the 2nd layer from the Layering Moon stencil and added color to the white moon. My moon is larger than the moon stencil, so I had to stencil twice for full coverage. You can see it in the photo below! I love that stencil!
Last step was to trim the card panel with my deckled paper trimmer to 5×3.75, trim a piece of black cardstock to 5.25×4, and place both layers onto a white card base sized 5.5×4.25. I finished with the sentiment that coordinates with the UU kit and glossy accents over the stamins on the flowers!
I think that silhouette stamping is so classic and can be used for any type of message – even sympathy! You can change up the colors as needed and use the tips I’ve suggested if you like a bold, full look to your silhouette images!
