Coloring for Depth and Interest – May Background of the Month

Coloring for Depth and Interest – May Background of the Month

Hi friends!

Welcome to Membership Thursday! Today we will be working on a coloring method to add depth and interest to your image. We’ll be using a variety of alcohol markers for this technique (any of your markers will do!). We will also be using May’s Background of the Month and one design from the Kit of the Month!

I love to find unique ways to enhance and compliment my backgrounds, and I love to color for relaxation! For my card today, I’ve used the following Copic marker markers (but you can use whatever markers you have in your stash):

E09, E08, YR27 – BH09, BG75, BG78 – BV04, BV13, BV02 – E59, E27, E74 – C3, C5, C7 – W3, W5, W7 – E70, E74, E89

I stamped the background image, which looks like cobblestones, in black and white. Then I colored each stone using the marker colors listed above (I used 3 markers in each color combo so I could get shading and highlights to my image). I started by coloring each cobblestone 5 times with the color combos, and then slowly built up more color until I had an even distribution of color. The really tiny cobblestones just received one color rather than 3. The end result was just incredible! The photo below shows a closer look at the background!

TIP: Get playful with your color selections! You don’t need to keep it real if you don’t want to – and use color mood boards to inspire your color selections! I feel like the more variety of color you use for a background like this, the more it will stand out!

Next, I stamped one of the beautiful nature images from May’s Kit of the Month onto white cardstock using black ink. I considered coloring the image, but I was so impressed with its beauty in black and white, that I left it uncolored. Plus, I feel like the black and white image really helped the colorful background be the showstopper! I trimmed the image using my deckled edge paper trimmer and adhered it over the background along with a sentiment from the kit.

The card itself seems simple, but the coloring took time to complete. So, I wanted to keep the rest of the card as simple as possible.
