Hi friends!

Welcome to Membership Thursday! This week I’ve got a simple mixed media technique to share that will make your cards amazing! I’ll be using the lovely butterfly from August Kit of the Month and patterned paper from Vintage Volumes! I’ll also be using my Copic markers!

I love to use patterned paper for my Unity cards, and I can take those designs to the next level with one simple technique – roughing up the edges! I started with 2 sheets of paper from Vintage Volumes and trimmed one piece to 5.25×4 and the 2nd one to 5×3.75. I opened up my scissors, took the sharp edge to the paper’s edge, and moved the scissors back and forth over the paper, until I created rough edges.
TIP: This isn’t a gentle technique – the paper may get wrinkled and even tear, but that just adds to the interest! Start a bit gently until you get the feel of it and then add intensity with your scissors. Hold your fingers very close to where you’re roughing up the edges, so you have more control over this technique. Also, what a great way to get your frustrations out!!! LOL.
Once both sheets were adequately roughed up, I grabbed one of my small mixed media stamps and added it to a few places over the smaller sheet of paper. Then I adhered them together and then placed both onto a white card base. Around the torn parts of my paper, I applied gold paste to help it stand out and add interest!

Next it was time to color the butterfly from the Kit of the Month. I used my Copic markers in shades of orange and blue (I consulted photos of butterflies to help me decide on colors). Then I fussy cut the butterfly, bent the edges of his wings to give it dimension, and adhered it at an angle over the patterned paper. I also added a sentiment. Then I finished with gold splatters over everything, butterfly included!

I love to rough up the edges of just about anything because it adds interest and dimension to your card! To learn more about Unity’s Membership kits and how you can save money each month, click here. Thanks for stopping by!
