How to Add Dimension to a Christmas Card with Layered Stamped Tags

Dimension on a Christmas card comes from stacking: trees stamped on one tag, a deer and sentiment on a second, the deer fussy cut with a hand drawn snowy hill and popped up on foam so he steps out of the scene. Lisa’s one minute video shows the stack come together with Pines of Endearment and Where Treetops Listen.

Lisa here, all about stamping dimension with this winter scene Christmas card. It starts with simple stamping, and once the layers stack the whole card comes to life.

Depth with simple layers: how the stack goes together

Layered Christmas card featuring a scalloped tag with stamped trees, a red deer, and a Merry Christmas sentiment, layered over patterned paper and set on an embossed green snowflake background with gold splatter. designed by Lisa Arana dahlhouse designs dot com

I pulled together some of my favorite Unity sets to build this sweet layered scene. I started by stamping the trees from Pines of Endearment on one tag and the deer from Where Treetops Listen and the Holiday Lane sentiment on a second tag. Then I fussy cut around the deer, including a hand-drawn snowy hill. Popping up the deer with foam tape makes it feel like it’s stepping out of the scene.

Behind it all is a tag cut from the Quiet Morning Christmas pattern paper that echoes those trees and the deer in such a lovely way. The embossed snowflake background adds subtle texture and the gold splatter finishes everything with a soft holiday shimmer.

Where to get the stamps

The trees, star and snowflake are Pines of Endearment (“To all of you”, “From all of us”). The deer is from Where Treetops Listen (“All is Calm. All is Bright”, “Wishing you peace in every season”, “May your year be calm and bright”), and the sentiment is from Holiday Lane. Paper, dies and tools are in the supplies list above.

There is a sale every week at Unity, so if the timing is not right today, add the set to your wishlist and wait for it.

Questions cardmakers ask

How do you make a stamped scene look dimensional?

Stamp the background elements on one layer and the focal image on another, fussy cut the focal image, and mount it on foam tape. One raised layer over a flat one reads as depth; a drawn ground line under the deer sells it.

Which stamps are in this scene?

Trees from Pines of Endearment, the deer from Where Treetops Listen, and a Christmas sentiment from Holiday Lane, all red rubber sets in the shop.

Do I need the discontinued tag die and embossing folder?

No. Any tag die or hand cut tag works, and the snowflake texture can come from any snow or dot embossing folder, or be left plain with a little gold splatter.
