Colorful Layers – Mixed Media Thursday

Hello Crafty friends!  I am excited to be back on the blog today sharing a card with layers, texture, and lots of color today!  I recently took a class online using Distress Crayons and this inspired my project today!  So let’s get started!

I started by creating a background using Distress Crayons with the Floral Tapestry Stamp set.  I applied the crayons directly to the stamp, spritzed the stamp with water, moved the crayons around a bit with my finger, then stamped the background directly on Bristol Smooth paper.  Using the crayons on the paper allows you to create a resist.  I then sprayed the background with Antique Linen stain, as well as Vintage Photo.  I heat set the background with my heat tool, then added water droplets and picked up the color with a paper towel.

Next I continued to build layers on the background using a combination of stamps ( When I See You, All That Grunge, as well as Thoughts from the Past).  On the background I also created my own collage paper using a piece of tissue and stamps.  I then ripped the collage paper and adhered this to my card panel, as well as old book paper.  I adhered these papers using a Gel Medium.  I then applied Gesso to various sections of the panel.  I heat set everything with my heat tool.

Next I continued to build layers and texture using a combination of Distress Crayons, as well as Oil Pastels.  I apply these directly to the panel, add a bit of water to my finger, then move the color around.  I continued to repeat this process on the background, as well as stamp images using the Oil Pastels.  Next I started to work on creating layers for my butterflies.  I used the One Night Only Stamp (stamped image to background from my stash), then die cut 2 circles from the Grit and Grace pattern paper.  I added oil pastels to these pieces, as well as distressed the edges with Distress Ink in Black Soot.

I then chose the placement for the die cut circles, as well as the ticket.  I then stamped 2 butterflies from the Paper Wings stamp set and colored them in quickly with my oil pastels.  I then fussy cut the butterflies.  I adhered all the layers together onto a top folding card base using both liquid glue and foam tape.  I completed the card with a sentiment from Trust it will be Okay.

Technique Tuesday ~ Distress Crayon Background Technique

 Hello there crafty friend!
I’m back with another Technique Tuesday! On the 2nd Tuesday of each month I’ll be sharing a bit of inspiration and a video featuring a fun technique. I hope that you’ll be inspired to get inky and play along with some of the techniques that I share.

 

Today’s technique is all about quick and fun backgrounds with Distress Crayons!! I was chatting with a crafty friend about Distress Crayons and how we HAD to have them but we haven’t played with them much, at all! So I thought, what better time to play with them and have some fun than for Technique Tuesday!

 

Quick & Fun Cards

And they were so much fun! AND quick!! That’s the key word when you’re in need of a card ASAP. Am I right?

 

For my first card I made a Spring version using Mustard Seed, Kitsch Flamingo and Salvaged Patina Distress Crayons. These are my go-to colors for Spring.

 

I stamped the lovely silhouette stamp from the Meadow of Hope {April 2023 Whit Kit} with VersaFine Onyx Black ink. It’s a tiny smidge crooked… but the crafty friend I’m sending it to won’t mind. An easy fix would be to trim the panel and adhere it to a white base. Or cut a skinny strip of black card stock to run across that bottom. But I left it as is.

 

I just love the font on this sentiment. Stamped so beautifully!

 

For my second card I made a Winter version… I know. I know. Enough with Winter. I can’t help myself. I love Winter. I’d much rather snuggle up in a blanket by a fire to stay warm during the Winter than to lay absolutely still under the ceiling fan just to get some relief from the heat of Summer. Hahaha… but that’s just little ole me.

 

For this background I used Seedless Preserves, Shaded Lilac, Tumbled Glass, and Chipped Sapphire Distress Crayons. Love love love this combo!! I will be using this combo again.

 

I used the gorgeous Shake Your Flakes {Front & Center stamps} for this card. One of my favorite Winter kits. I smudged this one up when I adhered it to the card base. I was devastated! Check out how I fixed it in my video down below.

Reverse Stenciling with Distress Crayons

Good morning! This is Heather with another card and technique video, this time featuring a vibrant and fun combination of Gesso and Distress Crayons for a reverse stenciling technique! I also use an adorable itty bitty stamp called Be Better Birdie.

Here is the video showing my technique for this:

I applied Gesso with a palette knife instead of a brush, but either works perfectly well. I made sure and set that aside to dry thoroughly, then blended distress crayons over the top, purposely going over the edges of the Gesso to enhance that line.

Next, I laid a stencil over the top and used a damp baby wipe to remove some of the distress crayon – isn’t it a fun look? At this point you can make the choice to seal that or not, but since this was just a card I decided to leave as is. I added my heat embossed sentiment and image that I had previously die cut in a circle shape. Once I let it sit out overnight, I rubbed it with my finger and didn’t notice any smudging. I don’t know what a wet finger or damp cloth would do at this point, but since it is a card and not going to be as long lasting as a framed piece to put on a wall, I wasn’t overly worried!
