Using watercolor neutrals ~ Mailbox card tutorial

February 9, 2022 - by Gaylynn

Using watercolor neutrals ~ Mailbox card tutorial

Hello, it’s Gaylynn.  Today, on the Unity blog, I am using watercolor neutrals for color on this mailbox birthday card.  Using light shades and colors paired with neutral paper provides a soft look.

This soft mailbox outdoor scene is perfect for using watercolor neutrals and also for almost any occasion and for greeting card sending.

Sentiment:
Just a note…
Happy birthday.

I made a quick video tutorial HERE showing the process for this project.

Helpful tips:
These are helpful tips for using watercolor neutrals in card making.  To begin, stamp sentiments and the mailbox scene onto watercolor paper.  Next, trim or die-cut the card layers.  Then, prepare a loose and watery color palette to get light shades in neutral colors.  Also, using a narrow paint brush, add diluted watercolor in sections, drying between colors to keep the colors from bleeding together.  Where you want a darker section, add more concentrated watercolor dabs.  To lighten, use a wet brush with water to blend out the color.  Heat set the watercolor.  Next, to accent the soft neutrals of the watercolor, frame and layer the card in neutral paper and twine.   Finally, adhere it all, to finish.

Here is another look.
