An Autumn’s Embrace

Happy Friday!  It’s Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules on the blog today with the result of your votes. Autumn’s Embrace was your choice to see a sample of in this blog and I hope I can help inspire you!  This beautiful image is very detailed and fun to color.  I used old patterned paper to inspire the colors in the image.  As for a technique, I used one of my favorites where I fussy cut parts of the image and then layer with foam tape to create dimension.

Below is are a quick pic of the patterned paper, the base stamped image partially colored and the fussy cut pieces colored. I colored the barrel as it would be seen, but only colored the edges of the florals and the pumpkin and leaves so that when you turn the card, colors are visible.

Before adhering the layers, I used Dried Marigold and Vintage Photo Distress ink on the edges of the ivory paper to create a central highlight to the image. This also adds warmth to the stark background.

When adhering the layers, for this card, I used a thin foam tape so that image showed depth without bulk. I used the same thickness for the sentiment that was die cut using the Scalloped & Stitched Sentiment dies.

Christmas in July

Happy Friday! It’s Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules on the blog wrapping up July with a “Christmas in July” themed card featuring the July 2023 Kit of the Month and the Shake Your Flakes {Front & Center}.  If you’ve been following my blog, you’ll recognize this background from the July 14th blog where I created four unique backgrounds using Lindy’s Magical Shakers to ink smoosh. I made this card using one of those panels, so let’s see how.

Step 1.  Prep the bottom of the card using anti-static powder.  Then stamp the waves from the KOM using white pigment ink and use white embossing powder to heat emboss the waves.

Step 2.  Using the largest deckled edged die {without stitching} from the Deckle & Stitches Nesting Die set, die cut the piece.

Step 3.  To create a difference between the ocean and the sky, I used some distress ink to darken the sea.  I also darkened the edges to create a central glow.

Step 4.  Because the paper I used to make the background originally was watercolor paper and not completely smooth, I used VersaFine Black Onyx ink to stamp the seagulls slightly off center.  I did not heat emboss it, but simple dried it with a heat gun.

Step 5.  To create Christmas/winter vibe using this oceanic scene, you just need to add snow!  Using Distress Spray Stain, I gently splattered it across the entire image. {Pro-Tip: Use the backing of the stamp as a mask when splattering to avoid getting ink on the stamped image.} Once done, heat set to avoid smearing the paint.

Step 6.  To add a little more drama and tie in the bold black from the birds, I used Black Soot Distress ink on the edges.

Step 7.  Mat the image on the largest stitched deckle die cut out of black card stock. I adhered it to a white card base.

Step 8.  Using a sentiment from the Shake Your Flakes {Front & Center Kit}, I stamped the sentiment using white pigment ink and white embossing powder to heat emboss the sentiment and then die cut it using the small stitched sentiment die from the Scallops & Stitched Sentiment Die set. I used a thin foam tape too adhere the sentiment slightly to the right to offset the birds.

This is definitely a nontraditional winter holiday card, but it’s a great way to celebrate the holiday with friends on the coast who have nautical winters.

Simply Natural One Sheet Wonder

Happy Friday!  It’s Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules back on the blog sharing a fun “one sheet wonder” techniqe using the beautiful Simply Blessed {stamp & paper} Bundle currently available!  But even if you don’t have this stamp set or this paper pack,  you can use this fun technique to create a set of cards with any of your 6″ x 6″ patterned papers.  Let’s get crafty…

We will be taking that one patterned 6″ x 6″ cotton image to create four cards with different looks and sentiments. This is a great way to make gift sets of cards for friends and family or even to make several cards for future use. It’s also a great way to make use all that beautiful paper that we seem to hoard. I also used some of the other more solid colored paper from this pack to mat the cuts.  You’ll see this in the final steps.

Here are the dimensions of how I cut that one piece of 6″ x 6″ patterned paper.  This is just one way to cut yours.  And truthfully, you can make 5 cards with these 5 pieces, but really was not feeling the small square all by itself, so I paired it with the smaller rectangle. You can find lots of other ideas on Pinterest as well for more inspiration.

Once the pattered paper was cut, I matted each on white card stock, and then used the brown patterned paper to mat them as well.  I measured each 1/4″ taller and wider for each layer.  Now, let’s make cards.

Using the first 2″ x 4″ piece, I paired it with the Scallop & Circles Nesting dies and stamped the floral image and a sentiment from the Simply Blessed stamp kit.  Again, keeping this very clean and simple and using brown inks to keep with the color scheme.

Using the 2.5″ x 4″ piece, I centered it and paired it with the Scallop & Stitched Sentiment Nesting Dies along with a sentiment from the Simply Blessed Stamp Kit.  I opted not to use the scalloped die to just keep the same straight lines like the other cuts and I didn’t want to cover any more of the pretty patterned paper.

Using the second 2″ x 4″ piece paired with the Dashes and Frills Hearts die set and another sentiment.  These sentiments fit perfectly into many of the new die sets by Unity so make sure to try them out!

And for this last card, I paired the two smaller cuts: the 1.5″ x 4″ and 2″ x 2″ pieces. I layered them over each other and still centered them over the card front. I ended up trimming down white card stock for the sentiment to avoid covering up the pretty patterned paper again.

Can you believe that just one piece of patterned 6″ x 6″ paper can create these beautiful cards? And it’s such a great way to mass produce cards to gift away for those non-card making friends.
