Step-by-Step Card Tutorial

Step 1: Prepare the Card Base and Background Layers

Start with a standard card base and trim patterned papers from the Sweet On You 6 x 6 Pattern Paper Pack to create layered panels. Mixing patterns works best when you vary scale—pair a busier design, like hearts, with a simpler pattern such as gingham or subtle texture.

Adhere the patterned paper panels to the card front, leaving a narrow border so each layer feels intentional and clean.

Step 2: Stamp and Color the Focal Image

Stamp the main image from the No Rush Now Stamp Set onto smooth cardstock. This image is perfect for Valentine’s Day because it feels nostalgic, warm, and story-driven.

Color the image using alcohol markers, keeping the palette soft and cohesive. Choosing colors that echo or compliments the patterned paper helps everything feel connected. Focus on gentle shading rather than heavy contrast—this keeps the image approachable for beginner colorists and fits the calm tone of the design.

Once colored, trim the image into a rectangle and mat it with coordinating cardstock to help it stand out from the background.  I did do a little fussy cutting around the seagull and the bottom right hand corner to create a little extra detail.

Step 3: Build the Card Layout

Adhere the stamped image panel to the right side of the card front. This placement creates a natural focal point and leaves space for sentiment and embellishment on the opposite side.

Keeping the image slightly raised with foam adhesive adds dimension without complicating the design.

Step 4: Add Sentiments and Embellishments with Ephemera

Select sentiment and accent pieces from the Bits of Love Ephemera. Ephemera is a great option when you want layered detail without extra stamping or die cutting.

Arrange the ephemera pieces on the left side of the card, tucking them slightly under each other for a natural, layered look. Small heart (created from a larger piece of ephemera and matching cardstock and a small heart punch from my stash) accents help guide the eye across the card and reinforce the Valentine’s Day theme.

I did add the large heart with the sentiment to an additional piece of matching cardstock and fussy cut around it to make it pop out from the pattern paper a little more.  Adhere everything securely once you’re happy with the placement.

Step 5: Final Details

Take a final look at the balance of the card. If needed, adjust spacing or add a small embellishment to fill any visual gaps. The goal is a finished card that feels cohesive, heartfelt, and not overly busy.

Split Panel Card Using Just Pig-Cause Stamps

Split panel cards are a wonderful way to add visual interest without making a project feel complicated. In today’s tutorial, you’ll learn how to create a friendly, approachable split panel card using the Just Pig-Cause Stamp Set (January 2026 Uniquely Unity Membership Stamp Set) paired with patterned paper from the North Pole Collection 6 x 6 Paper Pack.

 

This project focuses on clean stamping, simple alcohol marker coloring, and easy paper layering techniques that work beautifully for beginner to intermediate cardmakers. By the end, you’ll feel confident using a split panel layout to highlight stamped images while mixing patterned papers in a balanced, intentional way.

Step 1: Stamp the Image and Sentiment

Stamp the pig image from the Just Pig-Cause Stamp Set onto white cardstock, leaving enough space around the image for coloring. Stamp the sentiment above the image to anchor the design visually and keep the layout cohesive.

Tip: Keeping the sentiment on the same panel as the image helps the card feel unified and intentional.

Step 2: Alcohol Marker Coloring

Color the pig using light, soft tones to maintain a friendly and approachable look. Simple shading around the ears, snout, and body adds dimension without requiring complex blending.

Add a soft wash of color behind the image to ground it on the panel and prevent the design from feeling flat.

Beginner-friendly option: If background coloring feels intimidating, start with a very light layer and build slowly.

Step 3: Fussy Cut the Image & Creating the Panel

Place your card front into your trimmer where you want your split panel to be.  Trim to just above the stamped image and lift the trimmer arm and repeat this step from the bottom.

Carefully fussy cut around the pig, following the stamped image and the colored outline. Leaving a small border can help the image stand out against the background panel.

Tip: Turning the paper—not the scissors—helps achieve smoother curves and cleaner cuts.

Step 4: Create the Split Panel Background

Trim patterned paper from the North Pole Collection 6 x 6 Paper Pack into a narrow vertical strip. Adhere it along one side of the card front to create the split panel effect.  I used a larger strip (with subtle pinks, and greens in the background) for the first layer and then a thinner strip to layer over the right-hand side of the larger (with a touch of black on the pattern Paper)

The subtle patterns in this paper pack add texture without competing with the stamped image, making it ideal for mixed-media-style layouts.

Step 5: Assemble the Card

Adhere the colored image panel to the card base using foam adhesive, slightly overlapping the patterned paper strip. This overlap helps connect the two sections visually and keeps the design cohesive.

Finish by adding small embellishments if desired, keeping them minimal to maintain the clean and simple style.

Deer Quick and Easy Holiday Gift Tags ~ No Coloring

Hello, Gaylynn here. This set of four holiday tags were made in less than 30 minutes.  Today on the Unity blog, I am sharing handmade quick and easy holiday gift tags with deer as the focus.

For the holidays, I like to make sets of handmade tags for gift giving or to use for card making.  Working the steps for each at once saves time during the busy holiday season.

Helpful tips:
These are helpful tips to create these quick and easy holiday gift tags.  To begin, stamp the deer and the sentiments using two or three passes with a stamp positioner, like the Misti.   Next, trim or die-cut the deer panels, the background layers and the sentiments.  Dies are not necessary for these gift tags, if trimming with a paper trimmer.   Then, add hole punches.  Also, add foam adhesive to the deer panels and sentiments for a bit of dimension.  Next, add a brass brad to the top of the tags for a bit of embellishment.  Finally, layer them all and add cording, to finish.

Fresh Lemonade – Summer Fun

Hi Crafty friends!  It is Natasha and I am super excited to be back with you today for our Thursday challenge!  I am loving your Summer cards and seeing your beautiful inspiration on how you celebrate summer!  Thank you for sharing your gorgeous and creative work!  Be sure to share your summer themed cards with us over on over on the Unity {show & tell} facebook group!

One of my favorite summer things is flowers and when I saw the new set Fresh Lemonade, I fell in love!  There is something about florals and lemons paired together… just so beautiful!  So let’s get started! 

I started by stamping several of the elements from the Fresh Lemonade stamp set onto Canson XL Bristol Smooth paper.  I stamped the images using Versa Fine Clair ink in Nocturne and heat set them using clear embossing powder.  I did prep the card stock prior to stamping with my embossing buddy.  Once everything was ready to go, it was time to color!  I used my zig markers for today’s card!  I did 2 layers of color on each image and allowed them to dry each time before adding more color.  Once everything was colored I trimmed the images with my scan and cut.  You can also purchase the digital cut file for this set too!  See the link below!

Next I started to work on my card background using the amazing Pink Lemonade Paper Pack!  I fell in love with this paper right away!  I have seen such gorgeous inspiration using paper from this collection!  I chose several papers from this set to create the background!  I die cut them and then adhered them to my A2 panel.

To complete the card I adhered the elements to my pattern paper card panel with both foam tape and liquid glue.  I added some white dots to several of the stamped images for added interest.  I adhered a few gems and my card is complete!

Easy card making tutorial ~ Mouse stamping, paper, markers

Hello, Gaylynn here.  Mixing stamping, Unity paper and markers offer easy card making.  Today, on the Unity blog, I am sharing a sweet mouse card tutorial.

Using sweet stamps, Unity paper & Copic markers helped to provide easy card making and made this cute mouse come to life.

Helpful tips:

Here are helpful tips for easy card making while also using a mix of stamping, paper and markers.  To begin, trim or die-cut a background border from patterned paper and coordinating color cardstock.  Also, layer the border over the card base.  Next, stamp with ink compatible with your markers.  I chose to use Copic markers with Copic-friendly ink.  Then,  color in the mouse scene.  Next, trim or die-cut the mouse focal panel for the card center.  Also, stamp and trim a sentiment flag.  Assemble the layers, to finish.

Unity paper layers, jar flowers & Copic coloring ~ tutorial

Hi, Gaylynn here. For Technique Time at Unity, I share a sweet card with paper layers and flowers in a jar.  I used Copic markers for color along with Unity patterned paper.

For this flower jar card, I used coordinating soft colors for the flowers and for the patterned paper layers.

Sentiment:  A cozy hello.

Helpful tips:

Here are helpful tips for creating this floral card with paper layers.  To begin, stamp the jar flowers and the sentiment using Copic friendly ink.  Then, trim or die-cut all of the card layers and accents.  Next, add color to the delicate petals and leaves.  I used Copic markers for this card.  Also, for an accent, make a set of flags to go onto the front of the card, using the same patterned paper as the background.  Finally, assemble the card, to finish.
