DIY card topper ~ neigh there

Greetings, Gaylynn here.  Looking for a way to dress up your card? Make a DIY greeting card topper. It helps to have cute stamping to go with it.

Also, the featured Unity Stamp Company pun stamps and sentiment are from Neigh There stamps. To create this card, I used rubber stamping, alcohol markers for coloring, patterned paper and die-cutting. I included the project steps and supplies below.

In summary, the steps used to create this card are detailed below.

HELPFUL TIPS:

  • Prepare a white card base panel using white cardstock, 4 ¼” x 5 ½” folded.

  • Stamp the horse onto white cardstock using alcohol friendly black ink.

  • Color the horse scene. I used Copic markers in shades of gray, brown, yellow and green.

  • Stamp the sentiment near the top center of a piece of patterned paper.

  • Die-cut rectangle nesting layers from ZigZag dies.

  • Die-cut or trim the sentiment topper using the zig-zag dies and patterned paper.

  • Adhere and layer everything over the card front.

The Pecking Order graphic border and alphabet accents

Hey there, friends.  Welcome to the Unity blog.  I’m Gaylynn.  Here, I show the steps to create with chicken stamps, including simple graphic effects.  Accents were added using alcohol markers, a bold border and alphabet accents. This creates eye-catching effects to make the chickens stand out. I chose a simple layout and a cover panel featuring the three chickens.

In this project, I am featuring the Unity Stamp Company stamps called The Pecking Order.  This fun card was created with a clean design and solid color cardstock for the background. I have included the project steps and supplies below.

 

To begin, here is a look at the finished card.
Sentiment: What? Oh my word.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Prepare a vertical scored white card base 4 ¼” x 5 ½”, folded.

  2. Trim a piece of smooth white cardstock 4 1/4″ x 4 1/2″.

  3. Stamp the chickens and a sentiment near the bottom of the trimmed white panel, using marker-friendly black ink.

  4. Color the chicken scene using your favorite markers. I used Copic markers.

  5. Over the chickens, line up alphabet dies and temporarily tape them down. Then, die-cut the word “what” into the stamped panel. (or your word choice.)

  6. Trim a solid background panel from cinnamon cardstock to fit behind the chicken panel, approximately 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″ or a bit smaller.

  7. Layer and adhere the cinnamon panel over the card base.

  8. Back the chicken panel with thin foam tape, then add the panel to the top of the card, leaving a bottom border.

  9. Optional: Embellish with gems or pearls.

Holiday Wishes From All Of Us Step-By-Step Card Scene Border Kit Of The Month September 2025

Hey there.  Welcome to the Unity blog.  I’m Gaylynn.  For today, I show the step-by-step process of making this card scene border using a chicken friends stamp and adding a lattice accent feature. For the chickens, I stamped and colored the Kit Of The Month companion set. Also, I stamped the trellis using a background stamp onto colored cardstock.

Some of the techniques I used are rubber stamping, Copic marker coloring, die-cutting and ink blending. I used the September 2025 Kit Of The Month and Companion kit by Unity Stamp Company. See the full supply list linked below.

 

Sentiment:   Cozy wishes from all of us.

Helpful Tips:

1.     Stamp the Fowl Weather Friends towards the left side of smooth white cardstock using black marker friendly ink.

2.     Die-cut or trim the character panel 4” x 5 ¼”.

3.     Stamp and die-cut the sentiment into a tag shape plus add a narrow black cardstock trim.

4.     Onto light teal cardstock, stamp the lattice background using dark teal ink. For best results, use a stamp positioning tool to restamp as needed.

5.     From the lattice panel, die-cut or trim a border 5 ¼” x 2 ½” approximately.

6.     Add a narrow black trim line between the border and the icons using either a black marker or a narrow cardstock strip.

7.     Ink blend in light teal towards the left of the characters.

8.     Color each character with markers of choice.

9.     Adhere the lattice border to the right of the character panel.

10. Adhere the card front panel and tag to the card base.

How to Accent Background Stamps: Add a Card Topper or Border!

Hello there and welcome to the Unity blog.  I’m Gaylynn.  This project is one way to accent background stamps for card making and scrapbooking. Add a card topper or border detail. Simply, trim or die-cut a decorative panel with a sentiment or icon. The background will pop even more.

For this example, I used the July 2025 Background of The Month and the July 2025 Kit Of The Month from Unity Stamp Company. See the full project supply list and step-by-step instructions below.

Helpful Tips

  1. Stamp a large background onto smooth white cardstock using alcohol-friendly ink or ink for use with your markers.

  2. Die-cut or trim the background a bit smaller than your card base.

  3. Stamp a sentiment and flower or icon onto another piece of white cardstock.

  4. Die-cut or trim a narrow card topper or border from that panel to use as a card accent.

  5. Color the daisies and the added flower icon with coordinating colors using your favorite color medium.

  6. Adhere the background to the card base and pop up the topper with foam tape over the card front.

Nesting Dies Focal Border – Poinsettia Card

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and yours.  It’s, Gaylynn.  Here, I am sharing a Christmas card project using nesting dies focal border detail. This poinsettia Christmas card was made with a stamped and die-cut poinsettia border layer against a 3D embossed poinsettia background.

I also made this card flat for mailing holiday cards with just one postage stamp. The supplies that I used to make the elements are linked below.

Sentiment:
May the blessings of Christmas fill your home with joy.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Prepare an A2-sized side fold card base from white cardstock, 4 1/4″ x 5.5″ folded.

  2. Onto white cardstock, stamp the poinsettia in Copic friendly black ink. And, stamp the sentiment in black onto another piece of cardstock.

  3. Optional, add white accents to the poinsettia flowers using a gel pen.

  4. Die-cut or trim the stamping using an arch or shaped die to be used as a border.

  5. Add color to the poinsettia panel. I used Copic markers in red and green, but use what you have.

  6. Trim or die-cut a background layer from red cardstock.

  7. Lightly spritz the red panel with water.

  8. Dry emboss the red panel using an embossing folder.

  9. Lightly blend white pigment ink over the top portion of the embossed panel, using a disposable foam blending pad.

  10. Layer and adhere the layers over the card front, to finish.

Partially Cut Card Border Halloween Ghost

Hi there, Gaylynn here. Here, I made a partially cut card border Halloween ghost.  This one was made with flat layers, patterned paper and lace.

The ghost is partially off of the border into the sentiment panel, for effect.

Sentiment:  Trick Or Treat

Helpful tips:
To make this partially cut card border Halloween ghost, begin by preparing an A2 sized card base in white.  Then, trim a background layer from patterned paper.  Next, stamp and trim the sentiment onto white cardstock.  Also, cut a border layer for the sentiment. Then, stamp the ghost onto the center of an A2 sized piece of white cardstock.  Also, color in light shading for the ghost.  Next, cut out the right side of the ghost from top to bottom of the stamped panel.  Finally, adhere the layers onto the card base along with ribbon trim, to finish.

Slanted diagonal hand cut card tutorial + watercolor flowers

Hello, Gaylynn here.  Hand cut card detail adds interest and a different look to card making.  Today, on the Unity blog, I am sharing a way to hand cut a card front to be used as a dimensional card border.

This is a hand cut card with an added watercolor floral border.  It offers a clean and simple look plus a peek at the inside sentiment.

Sentiment:  Hey girl!

Helpful tips:

Here are helpful tips for making this slanted diagonal hand cut card.  To begin, cut and score an A2 card base.  Also, cut an inside panel using color cardstock.  Next, stamp the sentiment in the top right order of the inside panel.  Also, using waterproof ink, stamp the flowers and the leaves onto watercolor paper.  Then, watercolor the flowers and leaves.  Next, once dry, fussy cut (cut out) the flowers and the leaves and add foam tape to the back of each.  Now, using a paper trimmer or scissors, cut a diagonal from the card front, horizontally.  For this example, I cut at about 1″ from the bottom right up to 1″ from the top left score line.  Finally, assemble the floral border to the edge of the white diagonal flap and then add the inside panel to finish the card.

Also, Fiskars paper trimmer, scissors, Ranger watercolor paper, Altenew watercolor half pans, watercolor brush, Copic marker 100, Gelly Roll white pen, original Misti, MFT extreme black hybrid ink pad, amarena cherry ink cube and cement gray prestige cardstock, flat and foam double-sided tape.
