Snowflake winter holiday card making with laminator foiling for shimmer and shine

Hello and welcome to the Unity blog.  I’m Gaylynn.  We do not get snow here in Florida, but we can make snow cards. This is a large snowflake on a winter holiday card. It was made using stamps, a laminator and Deco foil for the shimmer.  See the details, short video and the supply list linked below.

I used the stamp set by Unity Stamp Company, Frosted Lace.  It is beautiful and large, perfect for adding shimmer and shine.

Sentiment:  Here’s to the wonder of winter and the warmth of the holidays.

Helpful Tips:

  1. Preheat a laminator at the highest setting for at least five minutes before foiling.

  2. I recommend you test this process using a small stamp before moving on to larger ones.

  3. Prep dark blue cardstock with a powder or antistatic pouch to prepare for heat embossing.

  4. Stamp the large snowflake and the sentiment onto 2 pieces of dark blue smooth cardstock, using embossing or watermark ink.

  5. Add clear fine embossing powder over the stamping and then heat emboss the snowflake and sentiment using a heat tool.

  6. Trim the sentiment and the snowflake panels.

  7. Trim a frame layer in darker blue cardstock.

  8. Trim a large piece of Deco foil (not hot foil) to cover both the snowflake and the sentiment panels.

  9. Sandwich the snowflake and the sentiment panels and top with a piece of silver transfer sheet of deco foil (pretty side up), all between a carrier sheet or parchment paper.

  10. Run the sandwich through a preheated laminator to set the foil. Then, remove the foil to reveal the shimmer.

  11. Optional: Decorate with splatters or tiny pearls for accents.

  12. Adhere the layers and the sentiment over the card base.

Oh Christmas Tree Oh Christmas Tree….

Happy Friday!

Andrea here with you today featuring some October new releases from the Background of the Month and the Kit of the month stamps. I know it’s Fall but if I don’t start making Christmas cards now then I end up skipping sending any that year.

I started out with stamping the BOM Holiday Jingle with Deco Foil’s Transfer Gel Duo. I use a foam applicator to apply this large area. Then I let it dry about an hour till clear before I put inside a parchment paper folder and apply my foil. Then after running it through my laminator I peel back the foil to see the magic happen! I added a small strip of the red paper I backed my image with to make it pop more.

While my transfer gel was drying I got to work on my tree image from the current KOM Sweet Bliss of Christmas.

I used the Copic markers shown above and a gold gel pen I had in my stash. I see from the picture it says Creative Memories brand. So that makes it about 20 plus years old and it still works! Hoarding pays off sometimes LOL.

I die cut my images out using Scallops and Rectangles Die set from Unity. It truly is a must have staple in my craft room.

That’s it! A wow card I hope the recipient loves. Longest part was waiting for the gel to dry. Gave me time to tidy my craft room a bit.

Hope Blooms with Whit Kit

Happy Friday,  Unies!  This is Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules on the blog and I’m sooooo excited to share just the FIRST things I made the awesome new February 2023 Whit Kit:  Hope Blooms.  There’s so much to create with in this kit and I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on it!

Each of these kits are curated by Whitney Magnuson and are meant to work together and with your other Unity stamps and stencils!  But that Newsprint Greetings paper was my absolute favorite, I had to start there.

Oh, and did you know the sentiment strips could be foiled!  Yep!!! What a great bonus!  To watch this card bloom before your eyes, check out the video tutorial below.

Bonus idea:  When you foil the sentiment, save the used foil to create another sentiment strip with the reversed look!

Getting Foiled with Cute Santa

Happy Friday Crafty Friends!  This is Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules on the blog sharing some old and something new!  If you haven’t scooped up that “Cute Santa” stamp set, you might want to… because, today it’s all about him… and some fun foiling with some of the older Deco Foil Toner Card Fronts. (Product list at the end.)

Background Ink: Tumbled Glass, Mermaid Lagoon, Prized Ribbon & Black Soot

Let’s start with this blue Christmas scene.  I wanted to use some “not-so-Christmas” colors for this Flurry Forest Toner Card Front and these fun blues just pop!  What’s great about the toner card fronts is that it’s smooth paper and takes to Distress inks really well.

Once the background was completed, I die cut it and foiled it using Unity’s Silver Glitter Transfer Foils.  Love the shine that foiling brings to a card.  Next, I stamped and colored Cute Santa and a sentiment.  Fussy cut Santa and die cut the sentiment using the Stitched Postage Nesting Dies and popped them up on the Toner Card front using foam tape.  Using the Scallops and Stitched Rectangles Nesting Dies I layered the background on black and adhered it on a turquoise card base for a little more pop!

Background Ink: Ripe Persimmon, Barn Door, Aged Mahogany

For this fun card, I wanted a little bit of an old school Christmas movie feel, so I colored Cute Santa using Toner Grey Copics and added a little color to his skin, the holly and gift. For the sentiment, I used the “Be Merry” from the December 2020 Whit Kit:  Winter Shake Up stamp set.

For the background, using Snow Many Flakes Toner Card Front, I got a little inky before foiling again with the Silver Glitter Transfer Foil {a Unity & Therm-o-web Collab that comes in gold too!}.  That bright red makes Cute Santa pop!

Let’s Get Foiled!

Happy Friday!  It’s Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules on the blog and I hope you’ve been enjoying this months theme of “Maximizing Your Stash”!  Today is the last Friday of July and I’m capping it all off with Unity Toner Card Fronts and Deco Foil Transfer Sheets.  These came out a while ago, but maybe they faded a bit in your crafty space… so let’s bring them back out and get foiled!

It’s been a while since I foiled and I’ll be honest… I don’t always nail it.  This was my first try using the Tranquil Leaves Deco Foil Toner Card Front and Emerald Watercolor Deco Foil Transfer Sheets.  I started by ink blending the toner card front using Cracked Pistachio, Evergreen Bough and Black Soot Distress Inks.  For this one, I started with the lightest color, Cracked Pistachio, in the center and blended out.  Next, I blended Evergreen Bough around the edges and fading toward the center.  Last, I blended the edges with Black Soot.

Using the Emerald Watercolor foil, I rolled it through the laminator.  I should have used a thicker shim so the wrinkles didn’t allow the foil to transfer… but I kind of liked the edgy look.  Using the Scallops and Stitched Rectangles Nesting dies I layered the toner card front on Black Licorice Luxury Card Stock.  Because the background was so cool, I added some simple die cut leaves and a sentiment sticker.  Let’s get foiled again…

This time, I used the Wild Garden Toner Card Front.  Again I ink blended first using Aged Mahogony, Victorian Velvet and Milled Lavender Distress Inks.  Somehow, these inks blended into this beautiful pink hue, so I paired it with Pink Melon Deco Foil Transfer Sheets.

I used a shim this time, but I think I need a thicker shim and maybe to turn up the heat.  Most of the foil transferred. I decided to compliment the black spots, but stamping the floral image from the Steps of Courage stamp set.  By leaving the image black and white, I felt it kept the background bold.  Using thin black framing, sentiment sticker and layering brings it all together.  But let’s do another one!!

This is where I nailed it!  Let’s talk about the inks first… this blend was a combination of Tumbled Glass, Faded Jeans and Ground Espresso Distress Inks on a Paisley Dreams Toner Card Front.  This was a vertical blend so I kept the width of the card and trimmed the top to create borders above and below on the card front.  Then, I used the Gold Deco Foil Transfer Sheet with a thick shim and more heat… and it was perfect!!!

It looks so cool and had a retro vibe, so I paired this card front with Make It Happen, Girl stamp set.  Keeping with the vibe of the black sentiment strips, I used one of the type font sentiments to heat emboss onto Black Licorice Luxury Card Stock and adhere it to the card along with some black flat sequins.

Now, I didn’t share another great technique for the left over foil sheets.  Check out this great video by Gaylynn Martling where she makes several cards using the those left over foil sheets and Toner Sheets.

Perfect to Me Ombre

This month’s theme is all about how to maximize your stamps and stencils! Happy Friday, Unies!  This is Julissa of Paper Gems by Jules on the blog today sharing three cards using the new “To Me, You are Perfect” stamp set and a simple ombre inking technique.  This new stamp set comes with 5 pieces:  three floral images, three matching solid stamps that fill in the florals and a beautifully scripted sentiment.

This first card is a simple one.  I did create masks for the floral images in order to layer them. I started with the largest flower in the middle, then masked it before stamping the other two florals using VersaFine Onyx Black.  I did heat set the ink before stamping, just in case.

Using my Misti, I line up the solid larger flower over the larger lined floral image and closed the Misti.  But instead of inking the solid stamp with one color ink (which you can do as well), I used a darker ink on the lower part of the stamp and pressed it on the paper.  Without removing the stamp, I took the next lighter ink and graded the ink a little higher to blend it.  I did this two more times with the next two shades of this pink, giving this great ombre.

For this next card, I used the same inking technique, but rather than doing it one flower, I did it with all of the solid pieces going up the left side of the card piece. For some added fun, I pulled out the amazing Unity Adhesive Transfer sentiments. In order to make it bold, I used the adhesive transfer on Black Licorice Luxury Card Stock and added hot pink transfer foil.

I liked the Hello, but kind of wanted to use more foil and these adhesive transfers because they were so cool and easy to use. I added the “BEAUTIFUL” onto the card front and used the same hot pink foil.  I’ll definitely be using more of these!!

For this last card, I stamped the flowers in the middle of the card front and used the same ombre inking technique.  For the sentiment, I used the “LOVE YOU” from the “In My Thoughts, Girl” Sentiment Kit.  For a little bling, I added some fun Flamenco flat sequins.

Love this ombre inking look and this new stamp set is a great way to highlight some of your favorite ink blends!  I used some inks I had on hand, but Unity just added the GKD Ink Cub Set of three gradients of Carnation Pink!  So while you’re shopping, you might want to add this to your cart!

Card foiling two ways ~ applying heat or pressure

Hello, it’s Gaylynn.  Today, I am sharing card foiling two ways on two cards.  This is a new and easy way to transfer foil onto card panels, with or without stamping.

These cards were pre-stamped and colored with room for added foiled sentiments.  Using card foiling two ways adds the perfect touch to this set of floral cards.

This birthday card was foiled using pressure from my die-cutting and embossing machine with the same plates as for wafer thin dies.

Helpful tips:

Here are helpful tips to create using card foiling two ways using sentiment adhesive style foil transfer sheets.  First, prepare two stamped card panels, leaving room for adding the foil sentiments.  Then, cut out all of the sentiments you want to foil from the Therm-O-Web transfer sheet.  Also, preheat a laminator and have your die-cutting machine handy with the same plates used for wafer thin dies.  Next, add foiling to each stamped panel in two ways noted below.

Pressure foiling:  Remove the film from the back of the sentiment, place the sentiment on the panel, gently rubbing it in place.  Then, sandwich between parchment paper and between the die-cutting machine plates.  Run through the die-cutting machine.  Then gently remove the top film.  Finally, place the trimmed foil pieces over the adhesive transfer and run through the die-cutting machine again to set the foil using pressure.

Heat foiling:  Remove the film from the back of the sentiment, place the sentiment on the panel, gently rubbing it in place.  Then, sandwich between parchment paper.  Run this through a preheated hot laminator.  Then gently remove the top film.  Finally, place the trimmed foil pieces over the adhesive transfer and run through the hot laminator once more to set the foil using heat.

 

Here is my congratulations card with foiling using heat from a preheated hot laminator.
